Day 1

Negombo

Negombo is often considered the best place for tourists to spend their first night in Sri Lanka for several compelling reasons.

Proximity to the airport: Negombo is located just 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), making it easily accessible after a long flight. This short distance means less travel time and a quicker start to your relaxation.

Beach access: The town offers beautiful beaches where travelers can unwind and adjust to the tropical climate. It’s an ideal place to recover from jet lag while enjoying the coastal ambiance.

Gentle introduction to Sri Lanka: The town provides a softer landing into Sri Lankan culture. It’s less hectic than Colombo, allowing visitors to ease into their trip.

Transport hub: Negombo is well-connected to other parts of Sri Lanka, making it easy to start your journey to other destinations the next day.

Accommodation Staying in Negombo allows tourists to begin their Sri Lankan adventure immediately, rather than spending time traveling to Colombo or other distant locations after arrival.

Local attractions: Despite being a transit point, Negombo offers interesting sights like the fish market, Dutch-era canals, and historic churches, providing immediate cultural experiences.

The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is of immense importance to Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious heritage.

Historical value
Dating back to the 1st century BCE, it’s the best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, offering a glimpse into ancient Buddhist art and architecture. It’s a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and has been a sacred place of worship for over 22 centuries.

UNESCO World Heritage Site
Recognized for its outstanding universal value, it was added to the World Heritage list in 1991.

Artistic treasure
The caves contain over 150 Buddha statues and hundreds of square meters of painted walls and ceilings, representing various periods of Sri Lankan art. The adaptation of a natural rock formation into a complex temple system showcases the ingenuity of ancient Sri Lankan architects.

Featuring an ornate stairway.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is famous for its leopard population and is considered one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot these elusive big cats.
The park is also home to a diverse array of wildlife including elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, and various species of deer. Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting numerous endemic and migratory bird species.

Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. The park is renowned for its unique complex of over 50 wetlands called “villus,” which are natural, sand-rimmed water basins or depressions filled with rainwater. The park’s landscape is characterized by dense scrub jungle, forests, and open grassy plains interspersed with the villus.

This varied habitat supports a rich ecosystem and offers visitors a true wilderness experience. Wilpattu’s relatively untouched nature and lower visitor numbers compared to some other Sri Lankan national parks make it an ideal destination for those seeking a more secluded safari experience.
